The Last Cargo Cult (Texas Premiere)
Created and performed by Mike Daisey
Directed by Jean-Michele Gregory

Presented in partnership with Fusebox Festival and the Department of Theatre and Dance

Hailed by The New York Times as “the master storyteller” and “one of the finest solo performers of his generation,” Mike Daisey’s extemporaneous monologues skewer, illuminate, and ultimately celebrate our world with equal parts humor and heart. Monologues like Tongues Will Wag, If You See Something Say Something and How Theater Failed America have become classic staples in Daisey’s repertoire.

Performing his critically acclaimed monologue, The Last Cargo Cult, Daisey masterfully tells the story of his journey to a remote South Pacific island whose people worship America and its “cargo.” Set against an examination of the international financial crisis that gripped the globe, this narrative confronts the financial system that dominates our world. Part adventure story and part memoir, Daisey explores each culture to unearth a human truth between the seemingly primitive and achingly modern.

“One of the elite performers in the American theater…with an effortlessness that comes from years of spinning tales, he imbues this trip with the punch of the first explosion of an action movie.” NEW YORK TIMES

Post-Peformance Talkback: The Last Cargo Cult

This was powerful – a performance that really did make you think. I’m still reflecting on some of the issues he highlighted around our culture’s obsession and relationship with money. Very provacative….

He did a great job of creating tension with the cash distributed to the audience, the intense lights on him for 2.5 hours, the glass of water he never drank, no intermission, etc. A little long….

MD, come back to Austin soon!

Excellent storyteller…have informed our friends back in NYC. Just a bit too long…definitely would keep us more alert if it was not as long a show. Thanks for a fun night!

I loved this performance! The hours flew past. Very engrossing, touching, as well as hilarious. Mike is so talented and perceptive. I do hope you bring other performers like him to Austin.

Thank you!

We loved it! Very thought provoking.

Curious to know if attendees turned in all the money that was handed out before the show.

Fabulously thought-provoking opportunity! Hope we can look forward to more of the same from UTPAC. And hope to see Mike Daisey again at the McCullough Theatre the next time he’s in town.
