“The rapidly developing company is composed of sensational dancers capable of shifting from one style to another with breathtaking facility.” – The Chicago Sun Times

Chicago’s Luna Negra Dance Theatre delivers richly textured and highly original contemporary dance in a distinctive style that blends the discipline of ballet with the fiery energy of Latin and Afro-Caribbean forms and rhythms. This innovative company, making their Texas Performing Arts debut, Friday, November 18 at Bass Concert Hall, collaborates with visual and media artists, musicians, and composers, to consistently push the creative limits of their performances.

Since its inception in 1999, Luna Negra Dance Theater has established itself as a significant and vital component of Chicago’s arts and cultural community. Founded by Cuban-born dancer and choreographer Eduardo Vilaro, Luna Negra celebrates the richness and diversity of Latino culture through the creation of works by contemporary Latino choreographers and through intensive, hands-on education programs that encourage discovery and exploration of personal and community identity. Under the leadership of award-winning artistic director Gustavo Ramírez Sansano, Luna Negra has risen to the forefront of American contemporary dance. The company has commissioned and presented works by acclaimed Latino choreographers from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba, Mexico, and Spain. Luna Negra also collaborates with artists from other disciplines to create richly textured and highly original works of contemporary dance theater. The company makes its home in Chicago at the Harris Theater in Millennium Park, and tours nationally and internationally.
