“In Kotche’s solo atmospheric work with On Fillmore, the drum set becomes an orchestra.” – Los Angeles Times

“John Luther Adams is one of the greatest living composers – and my personal favorite. He has been extremely important in the evolution of percussion music, composing pieces for a wide range of percussion throughout his career.” – Glenn Kotche

With commissioning support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Texas Performing Arts presents the world premiere of I L I M A Q, a drum kit opera written by American composer John Luther Adams for percussionist Glenn Kotche, drummer of the alternative rock band Wilco. The concert also features additional works performed by Kotche’s duo On Fillmore, with bassist Darin Gray.

Chicago-based percussionist and composer Glenn Kotche has been called one of the most exciting, creative, and promising composers and performers in modern music, receiving international attention for his “unfailing taste, technique and discipline” (_Chicago_ Tribune). He has been commissioned to write pieces for world-renowned ensembles including Kronos Quartet, Bang on a Can All-Stars, Sō Percussion, and The Silk Road Ensemble. He is a regular collaborator with contemporary music sextet eighth blackbird.

Composer John Luther Adams has been called “one of the most original musical thinkers of the new century.” Adams was honored with a 2011 Heinz Award, which recognized his ability to connect people to nature through music. His new piece I L I M A Q is an ambitious work for solo percussion, recorded soundscape, and electronic processing.

Mr. Adams will be in residence at UT to work with Mr. Kotche prior to the world premiere.
