“Bring the World to Austin? Hey, that’s what I do for a living! As a Spanish teacher in a local public high school, my career revolves around opening the eyes of South Austin teenagers to the wonders of the language and cultures of Spain and Latin America. For many of my students, Spanish class is the first time that they have ever really taken a good look at a map of the World, much less explored their curiosity of foreign lands. Through “my” kids and their excitement and wonder, I am daily reminded of what first drew me to travel to Spain and fall in love with Spanish myself in the first place.”

That’s the winning entry by Aine Casey in the recent KXAN Austin News ‘Bring the World to Austin’ contest, where contestants were asked to submit a short essay and photo representing how they ‘Bring the World to Austin.’ Aine’s winning entry earned her the grand prize of 2 BusinessFirst International Round Trip tickets on Continental Airlines.

Aine Casey, originally from the Chicago suburbs, graduated from Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana in 2005 with a degree in Comparative Languages and Linguistics. She moved to Austin in 2007 and is currently in her second year of teaching Spanish at William B. Travis High School. Aine plans to use the tickets to travel to Peru and see Machu Picchu, claiming, “I can’t wait to return to school in the fall and tell my students all about what Peru is like!”

Along with Season Presenting Sponsor, H.E.B., KXAN Austin News and Continental Airlines are valued sponsors of the Performing Arts Center.
