“Lloyd’s work on tenor saxophone and flute is extraordinary. A true original.” – Los Angeles Times

Considered one of Jazz’s elder statesmen, Charles Lloyd creates music both spiritual and modern. Mining decades of artistic soul-searching, his performances create a sense of immediacy in sound that is transcendent, and not just for jazz enthusiasts. A totally lucid and vibrant musical romp, Lloyd is, at once, conductor, engineer and passenger on an enlightening musical journey.

beautiful music, wanky piano sounds

This was a evening of beautiful music played by four first-rate musicians in a highly cohesive band. I love Charles Lloyd and I loved this concert. I was, however, disappointed by the sound of the piano—to my ears it wasn’t right, and by the end of the night it was slightly out of tune. Jason Moran played wonderful music in spite of it, though.

Charles Lloyd

Lloyd’s continuous two hour performance with his three young colleagues was outstanding. I’ve enjoyed several YouTube rebroadcasts since experiencing this wonderful performance. In addition to Lloyd, I was especially intrigued with his drummer, Eric Harland. Let’s do it again, soon.

Charles Lloyd concert

I have been a fan of Charles Lloyd since the ’60s but had never seen him in person. I appreciate UT bringing him to Austin. Both Lloyd and the members of his group were great – better than my very high expectations. The only negative from my standpoint was that I sometimes had to strain to hear Lloyd, particularly when the rest of the band was playing loudly. Lloyd doesn’t play as loudly as most saxophonists and I’m not sure that was taken into account. (I saw him the next night in Houston also and this problem was nowhere near as pronounced.) Overall, however, it was an unbelievable thrill to see him live.

Charles Lloyd Quartet

The best jazz concert I have ever attended.
Spectacular!
Please have them back again soon.

I also really appreciated the unobtrusive lighting and stage-set in the auditorium.

Charles Lloyd Concert

It is good to see Austin booking quality Jazz Musicians for a change. This is suppose to be the Music Capital of the World so jazz should be one of its focus. The Charles Lloyd concert was another superb concert by one of jazz’s elder statesman. He carves a beautiful piece of music out of stone. His music starts rough but always ends beautifully. His backup group was also superb. Jason Moran on piano was awesome and deserves a chance to play in Austin on his own. The drummer, Eric Harland, was fantastic, playing all types of percussions and laying down exciting jazz rhythms. Charles stated that he would like to return and we should most certainly honor his request.

AWESOME! AMAZING! FANTASTIC!

Great players! Great concert! Let’s get them back soon!

Charles Lloyd concert

Probably the best concert of this season. Four extraordinary musicians really at the peak of their art.

Charles Lloyd show

This past Friday was some of the best jazz we have ever seen. Charles still has his youthful enthusiasm for entertainment, and his bandmates are top notch performers. It is great to know that the spirit of “Old School Jazz” is being maintained, and yet this has a modern sound which does not sound stuffy and fixed. Congratulations Charles and company for making your sound hip and cool. Thanks for the fantastic show!

Cheers!

CHAS LLOYD QUARTET

Great show. Mr. Lloyd is highly underrated. He is one of the last great old-school “moderns”. So happy UT brought him!
